Bought this mainly for the BluRay player, but I have been looking for a good VHS player combo for the occasional VHS tape we have (at least until I get all of my tapes converted to DVD!).
The only thing that I found frustrating was the key entry for VieraCast functions (YouTube, etc). It is pretty awkward. A Bluetooth or USB keyboard would have put this at 5 stars all-around.

I was satisfied with playback performance on blu ray, dvd, and VHS. The three star rating on sound quality is due to the fact that this is an irrelevant measure for this device. Sound quality is dependent upon the TV or sound system being used with it.

A minor quirk is that the 24p setting reverts to the regular BD/DVD setting when you put in a new disc. This Panasonic upconverts SD DVDs to near Blu-ray quality through the HDMI output.

This player is da bomb! I ve thrown everything I could at it and it s passed with flying colors! I have plenty of pre-recorded along with home made vhs tapes of my kids, family gatherings, and holidays so I thought I d get one of these and I wouldn t have to have 2 units cluttering up the living room.
Let me begin with something everyone should know, VHS wasn t meant to be digitally watched. It was first and formost designed for ease of use. That said, one will not get a digitally perfect picture(i.e. bluray/HD). This panasonic vhs player can only do so much and what it does is excellent! Now one will need to go thru and find the best settings for thieir tv and the unit. I happen to have a panasonic TC-P42C1 42" plasma. It s nice that the remote control from this unit will control the on/off and volume control of the TC-P42C1. The VHS unit forward fasts like a rabbit, very fast. Can you san scalded dog!? Now,that s fast. I wish when VHS initally came out the standard was as fast as this machine.
I have used the Youtube feature and I like it. I see no reason why it won t connect to Netflix the manual says it should if you have an SD card. Another cool feature is the USB and SD connections. One can download pics to a jump/flash drive and the unit will scan the drive and you can view them on the TV!I ve even signed up for amazon.com movies and tv shows, the ones I ve seen look great. My biggest complaint os my slow internet connection, it buffers a lot. not the fault of the unit.
I ve spent most of my review on the VHS part. I believe that is why most purchasers would be looking at it.
NOW for the BLURay:
BluRay movies look great!!! the buttton below the yellow button at the bottom of the remote changes fron B/R to Tape. While you are down there try out the Viera cast it s the next button to the left..

I was skeptical on paying hundreds of dollars on a Blu-ray player when they first were introduced; they seemed way over priced as well as not having many titles in the format. Why pay so much money for something that would limit your possibilities? You wouldn t. So I waited a couple years and as I was watching the economic stability get worse and worse I decided to take another look at these outrageously overpriced players once again thinking the price had stayed the same. I was wrong. Not only had the prices dropped significantly, there where now thousands of titles available, the discs were now available through Netflix, and every major brand was now producing a much wider range of players to choose from.
I figured it was time to look into finally buying one with Christmas on its way and a house-full of avid movie watchers, why not watch movies in "the best way to watch movies...EVER!". So as the holidays approached I approached the computer and started to do the research to find the machine with the best bang for the buck. Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, and Philips seemed to be all putting out basically the same product for around $200 and it was hard to choose. Samsung seemed a good choice because we already a Samsung flat screen and they were very highly rated but so were the others. Which one was the best for the money though?!? That s what I really needed to find!
I felt sort of unsure as to whether it was a good decision buying Blu-ray player weeks later when I had finally decided on a Samsung with 5 star ratings. Sure it put out great picture quality, but what about the library of VHS tapes that were perfectly fine to watch of which I had accumulated over the years including old family movies from the 90 s. Such great memories to be lost just for a better cinematic adventure? It didn t seem worth it so I decided that waiting a year or two more may be just what it takes for them to come out with a player that accepts VHS tapes. The search was over and in a final attempt to find a player I looked up "Blu-ray VHS player" into the search bar on Amazon. To my utter suprise I received results one of which was an actual Blu-ray,DVD,and VHS Triple combo player with HDMI up scaling for VHS and DVD. The brand also suprising:Panasonic, and it had great ratings and a very reasonable price tag! Within a week it was being shipped and my family and I couldn t be happier! All three formats look, sound, and feel outstanding on our 40-incher. And along with the triple combo format availability, streaming YouTube, Picasa, BD Live, SD/XD card slot, and a USB port are also part of this amazing machine. So if you are planning on buying a Blu-ray player and you re still on the fence about it like I was, wait no longer and jump the fence because now the superior movie-watching experience doesn t require the sacrifices of giving up the old for the new as it used to. Take the leap of faith! It s definitely worth it!

The Panasonic VHS player on this unit is the best on the market, and its playback image quality is better than any other VCR I owned. Of course, I made the mistake of buying JVC S-Video VCRs, whose build quality was terrible. For anyone with VHS tapes they want to transfer to a DVD recorder, this unit is the one to get before Panasonic discontinues it.

The Blu-ray player s performance is dazzling after using the Display button to have the picture set to fine and the video to 24p. A minor quirk is that the 24p setting reverts to the regular BD/DVD setting when you put in a new disc. This Panasonic upconverts SD DVDs to near Blu-ray quality through the HDMI output.

I have only had this unit for a week, but already I know the Amazon Gold Box price I paid was a bargain. I played the How The West Was Won BD in Smilevision, simulating Cinerama, and was duly impressed.

For anyone planning on transferring their aging (non-copy protected) VHS tapes to DVD format, this unit is the one to get. Its VHS playback quality is excellent, and the remote control buttons are well placed and designed. Panasonic sure knows how to make good remotes. And good Blu-ray/VHS players.

I bought this player because I wanted a single chasis device that would play blu ray disks as well as old VHS tapes. It does this job very well. I was satisfied with playback performance on blu ray, dvd, and VHS. The three star rating on sound quality is due to the fact that this is an irrelevant measure for this device. Sound quality is dependent upon the TV or sound system being used with it.

One nice feautre of this player is that it connects to the TV with a single HDMI cable (no separate cables are necessary for VHS playback). The internet connection successfully checked for firmware updates, although mine came with the latest version already installed.

Delivery from Amazon was very fast.

This player combines the best of both worlds. It s a blu-ray player so you get the best picture possible. It will also play my old collection of VHS tapes with a better picture than any VHS player I ve ever owned.

The combo player over all is a good item. The quality of picture is excellent with DVD s regardless of type listed that it will play. The ability of other data sources is a plus! But the two things that did not impress me was set up time and the instruction information. They were vague and confusing at times.

The use of VHS is poor. The first time used it ate a classic tape. I hope that it does not do this to the next tape or it will be returned. I hope Amazon will take care of the matter if it comes to this or Amazon will become history to me.

I like panasonic products, and still have two of their older top of the line VCR and DVD changers that I still use and were able to use in this comparison. So by feature set:

Blu ray - blu ray disks loaded and displayed at least as fast as on my PS3. I hooked the BD70 up to a 32 in samsung TOC monitor which I use for video work. The test disks I used were two brand new Toy story 1/2 blu ray disks I picked up on the wild sale at Toys R us (net $7 each - see Slickdeals) The color and texture were superb and equal to the PS3 to the unaided eye. Comparing it to the older DVD at 480p, upscaled by the TV, was no comparison, the blu ray is visibly superior even on a small screen. However the BD70 had frequent video skips/freezes while the audio played on. I tested the disks at the exact same points on the PSP, no problem. Maybe some bad buffer memory on the BD70, but unexcuseable for a high end Panasonic product. Menu control on the remote was adequate, but the skips ultimately caused me to return the unit as defective.

VHS - I must say I was really looking forward to seeing the VHS playback after reading so many good reviews on Amazon, but in this case there was slightly better color rendition and less noise than on the older VCR (which was going in by analog by the way) but it certainly wasn t tremendously better, and thus I am disappointed. I tested with both commercial and homemade tapes, same results.

SD reader - flawless, it found both photos and AVCHD (1080p) content from a variety of cards, and even played canon high def files. I can also play these from the PS3 of course, but you have to really dig through the folders to get them located.

USB reader - big disappointment, while it recognized one of my SD card readers reading the same card I had used in the SD slot test, it didn t read the AVCHD files as it had before, and it sometimes refused to read anything. It would only read one of my three 8 gig pen drives, and would not locate or play the mp3 files that were on them. Rebooting the BD70 was needed on occasion to read the pen drives in the first place. I also hooked up a WD passport 160 gig portable drive with a stack of movies, photos, and mp3 s and while it booted the drive, it would not read it. Too bad, since if it had this feature I probably would have tried another unit rather than giving up all together. The PS3 does this with no problems.

Internet - I did not test the internet access since without being able to play the usb media and the skipping on the blu ray I gave up playing with the BD70.

If they release an update with better codecs to read h24/mp4 and a more robust BR disk reader it might be worth another shot, but by that time the 3D players maybe out in the wild. Kudos to amazon, they offered me another unit, but I declined and opted for the refund.

This is a great Blu-Ray for the price. Great quality picture and sound. I do wish the Viera Cast would have a link to Netfixs and was wifi, but again for the price it s pretty good. Very simple to connect and operate. The hdmi to the flat screen and optical sound connection produces a very good picture and sound. I have not used the vhs so I can t comment.

In spite of all the excellent reviews, there is one MAJOR DRAWBACK to this Panasonic Model DMP-BD70V Blu-ray VHS player....that is it is exclusively a PLAYER. Do not buy it if you plan to record TV programs on VHS and play them back later. It has absolutely no RECORING ability. You can PLAYBACK VHS tapes recorded on some other VHS recorder/player. Better have another VHS recorder/player or a good friend who has one who will record programs for you.
Regarding the playback ability -- well for both Blu-Ray, and standard DVD and pre-recorded VHS -- it does just fine. The instructions are somewhat spastic; but apart from it s inability to RECORD VHS TAPES, it is a respectable player.
It can support Internet connection via your PC in several varied arrangements.

I finally broke down and got a blue ray! I wanted this one because it is Panasonic and because it had the vhs as well. I still have lots of vhs even though I am getting rid of some as I get dvds. Everything works great and I have it hooked up to a switcher because I also have the cable system and another hd dvd player that is multi region/code free for my pal dvds. As of now, I only have one blue ray dvd (Star Trek) but it is fantastic with this dvd player.
Panasonic usually delivers and they have this time.

This is simply put: awesome. The picture quality from the DVD and VHS is vastly improved and even watching the videos on Youtube improves the quality from watching them on the computer. The Amazon VOD service makes this ten times worth the money. I was considering going to Netflix as we have no more video rental places but I don t think I would do that. Thanks Panasonic!!!!
